Vaccination Against Salmonella enteritidis and Monitoring Vaccination Success

Ever since the late 1980’s, when grade A shell eggs were associated for the first time with cases of human illness caused by Salmonella enteritidis (Se), the commercial layer industry in the United States has been presented with numerous and variable difficulties in presenting its product, the table egg, for what it is: a completely natural food item of excellent nutritional value, with undoubt...

Apical seal versus coronal seal

the results of the initial study. It was concluded that the apical fluids, with their primary source being blood serum, diffuse into the empty canal spaces, stagnate, undergo degradation and then act as a physicochemical irritant when they diffuse back into periapical tissues. In support of this theory of stagnation, in 1955 Dow and Ingle showed that the majority of the endodontic failures were...

Measurements of foraging success in a highly pelagic marine predator, the northern elephant seal.

1. Identification of foraging behaviour and the ability to assess foraging success is critical to understanding individual and between-species variation in habitat use and foraging ecology. For pelagic predators, behaviour-dependent foraging metrics are commonly used to identify important foraging areas, yet few of these metrics have been validated. 2. Using the northern elephant seal as a mode...

Decreasing ice coverage will reduce the breeding success of Baltic grey seal (Halichoerus grypus) females.

Baltic grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) alternate between land and ice breeding, depending on ice conditions. We show that the fitness of grey seal females in terms of pup mortality and quality is reduced when breeding on land as compared with ice. The mean preweaning mortality rate on land was 21.1% (range 0% to 31.6%), and correlated with birth density (range 0.5-5.2 pups 100 m(-2)). The mean ...
